My Story

My Journey Into Trading

And why you should consider it too

Assalaamu Alaikum

My name is Sehyr — I'm a mom of three, a doctor and an engineer by training. But my real passion became trading many years ago. I used to watch my brothers trade and couldn't understand how people made money just from moves in the market. Being an introvert, I loved the idea of building an income without deadlines, meetings, or answering to anyone. I asked my brothers to teach me, but I needed to start from square one and they made it far too complicated.

As a Muslim, I had real concerns about whether trading was even halal. Could I trade stocks? What about forex, options, or futures? I spent years navigating the Islamic rulings around it — and I want to save you that time by sharing what I learned.

Trading has given me something no job ever could — freedom. And I truly believe it can make you a better Muslim, too. It takes faith and control over so many emotions, all while remembering that what you earn is ultimately already written for you. I started seven years ago knowing absolutely nothing. I've had big wins, painful losses, and moments I doubted I'd make it — but through all of it, it has been worth it.

If you're reading this, you're probably curious but unsure where to start — overwhelmed by information, unsure what's halal, wondering if you could ever really do this. I've been exactly where you are. This guide is the start I wish someone had given me when I began — clear, honest, and from square one. Let's begin.

01
The Basics

What Is Trading?

Let's start from zero

When you buy a stock, you're buying a tiny piece of a real company. Own one share of a company, and you own a small slice of that business.

Stock prices move up and down all day, based on simple things: how many people want to buy versus sell, how the company is doing, and how people feel about it. Trading is buying a stock and aiming to sell it later at a higher price. That difference is your profit.

You'll hear two words a lot. Investing usually means buying and holding for years. Trading means capturing shorter moves — over days or weeks (called swing trading), or even within a single day (day trading). Same idea, just different timeframes. At Sehyr Trades, we focus on swing and day trading halal stocks.

Here's the part that surprises people: you don't need to predict the future. You just need a plan for every trade —

1. What you'll buy
A halal stock that's showing a good setup.
2. When you'll exit if wrong
A price where you cut a small loss and walk away safely.
3. When you'll take profit
A price where you lock in your gain.
That's the whole game
Everything else in this guide builds on these three simple decisions.
02
Speak The Language

The Words You'll Hear

Every term you need, explained simply
Ticker
The short symbol for a stock. Apple is AAPL, Tesla is TSLA. It's just the stock's nickname.
Share
One unit of ownership in a company. Buy 10 shares, you own 10 little slices.
Broker
The app you use to buy and sell stocks, like Webull or Interactive Brokers.
Candlestick
Each candle on a chart shows the price over a period — how high it went, how low, where it opened and closed.
Support
A price level where a stock tends to stop falling and bounce. Think of it as a floor.
Resistance
A price level where a stock tends to stop rising. Think of it as a ceiling.
Entry
The price you buy at. Where your trade begins.
Stop loss
The price where you sell to cut your loss if the trade goes against you. Your safety net.
Target
The price where you plan to take your profit and close the trade.
Risk / Reward
How much you could lose versus how much you could gain. Good trades risk a little to make more.
📈
Don't worry about memorizing these
You'll pick them up naturally as you go. Inside our free community, our charting lessons walk through each one with real examples.
03
The Core Skill

How a Single Trade Works

The three prices you decide before you buy

Every good trade has three prices decided before you ever click buy. This one habit protects your money more than any strategy.

TARGET — take profit ENTRY — buy here STOP — exit if wrong
Reward (entry → target) Risk (entry → stop)

The gap between your entry and your stop is your risk. The gap between your entry and your target is your reward. A good trade risks a little to make more — for example, risking $1 to make $2. Most beginners skip the stop and let a small loss become a big one. Decide all three first, and stick to them.

🎯
Always know your plan
Every trade I take, I decide these three prices first — entry, stop, and targets — before I ever risk a dollar. No guessing, no winging it.

The Foundation

Halal vs. Questionable

Which trading styles actually pass

Not all trading is permissible in Islam. Some markets are clearly halal; others are debated or avoided by most scholars. Here's the honest breakdown of how each is generally viewed.

Halal

Widely accepted
Stocks
Real ownership in a business. Halal if it's screened — it avoids haram industries and keeps debt at acceptable levels. No inherent riba, gharar, or maysir.
Halal ETFs
Funds that track Shariah-compliant companies and avoid interest-bearing holdings. Always screen them first.

Most scholars avoid

Riba · Gharar · Maysir
Forex
Built on leverage and overnight swap fees — interest (riba) — plus heavy speculation.
Options
Largely speculative, with time-decay and interest components.
Futures
No real ownership, margin/interest, and excessive uncertainty (gharar).
This isn't a fatwa, and I'm not a scholar — it reflects my best understanding of commonly-used Islamic finance guidelines. Always do your own research and ask a knowledgeable imam. The safest path for most retail traders: stick to screened halal stocks.
05
A Closer Look

Why Most Scholars Say No

Forex, options & futures — the concerns
Forex
Most brokers offer leverage — you borrow money to trade, which usually involves riba. Positions held overnight are charged interest (swap fees). And it's heavily speculative — betting on currency moves rather than owning an asset.
Options
Largely considered impermissible. Pricing carries time-decay and interest components, and most strategies are pure speculation rather than real ownership of anything.
Futures
You agree to buy or sell at a future date, so there's no immediate ownership. They often require margin (riba) and involve excessive uncertainty (gharar).
The exceptions
A minority of scholars allow these under strict conditions (no leverage, no swaps, clear ownership, or genuine business hedging). For everyday retail traders, they remain problematic.
It's generally safest to follow the majority view, which discourages forex, options, and futures for retail traders. If you have specific concerns, consult your local imam or a qualified Islamic finance expert.
06
Screening

Is This Stock Halal?

Two simple checks before you buy

Not every stock is halal, even among regular companies. Before buying, run two checks.

1
The business check — what do they actually do?
Avoid companies whose main business is haram: alcohol, gambling, conventional banks and interest-based lending, adult content, pork, tobacco, and weapons. If the core business isn't permissible, the stock isn't either.
2
The financial check — how is it funded?
Even a good business can fail screening if it carries too much interest-based debt or earns too much from interest. Scholars use rough limits (for example, interest-based debt under about a third of the company's value). You don't need to calculate this by hand.
✅
The easy way — our free halal checker
We built a free tool for our community. Type in any ticker and it instantly tells you whether the stock is halal, haram, or still under review. Free to use, no catch — it's the fastest way to trade with peace of mind.
🔎
Prefer an app?
Tools like Zoya and Islamicly also screen stocks for you and show the breakdown.

Mindset

What Trading Really Requires

Psychology is the real edge

Most people fail at trading not because they don't understand charts or strategies, but because they struggle with emotions — fear, greed, impatience, and doubt. Every trader goes through this. The good news: what you learn here will serve you for the rest of your life.

Patience
The market rewards those who wait for the right setups — not those who chase every move.
Emotional control
You will have losses. Learning to manage them calmly is what separates a great trader from the rest.
Resilience
No one wins every trade. Learning from your mistakes is what leads to long-term success.
Discipline
Sticking to a plan and following your rules matters more than having a "perfect" strategy.
The market will test you. If you master your mindset and stick to your rules, you give yourself the best possible chance.

Getting Started

Starting as a Complete Beginner

The first steps, in order
1
Understand what trading is
Buying and selling stocks to profit from price movements. Unlike long-term investing, it focuses on capturing shorter-term opportunities.
2
Learn the market basics
Stocks represent ownership in companies. Prices move on supply and demand, company performance, the economy, and sentiment.
3
Screen for halal stocks
Run the two checks from earlier — the business check and the financial check — or use our free halal checker to do it instantly.
4
Pick a strategy and stick to it
Beginners often lose by constantly switching styles. Swing trading (holding days to weeks) offers a great balance of flexibility and profitability — it's where I'd start.
5
Start with a small account
You don't need much — many brokers let you start with $100–$500. Trade small while you learn, so early mistakes are cheap lessons.
09
Getting Started

Build the Right Habits

Mindset rules that protect your money
6
Develop the right mindset
The biggest mistakes come from emotional reactions. Three rules to live by:
✓
Never risk more than you can afford to lose
Protecting your capital always comes first.
✓
Have a plan before entering any trade
Know your entry, your stop, and your target in advance.
✓
Accept losses as part of the process
They're tuition. Every trader pays it — learn and move on.
7
Keep learning and improving
The best traders treat this as a skill that takes time to master. Keep refining your approach, reviewing your trades, and learning from your mistakes.
Every trader goes through this — but what you learn along the way will be invaluable for the rest of your life.

3
Check your stocks are halal
Use our free halal checker, or an app like Zoya or Islamicly, before you buy.

Practice first
Before risking real money, place a few practice trades to learn how everything works.

TradingView is one of the best tools for beginners — analyze stocks, set alerts, and build your plan.
